Never before in U.S. history has private development brought together the scale of engineering, urban planning and architecture that is underway at One Hudson Yards, a $3.5 billion mega-neighborhood that will take more than a decade to complete on Manhattan’s west side overlooking the Hudson River.

One Hudson Yards

It’s not about luxury being exclusive and haughty,” Kikoski says. “It’s about luxury being welcoming, celebrating craftsmanship and creating an emotional warmth and richness.

Comprising office, retail and residential space, the project will house 16 structures, most of which will rest on a platform constructed over an operational railroad yard. Construction began in 2012 and is slated for completion in 2024. Towering among the already-completed structures in the Hudson Yards development is a masonry and glass-clad building of timeless residential design: One Hudson Yards

The 33-story high-rise is flanked by the city’s vibrant High Line and was designed by Davis Brody Bond with Ismael Leyva serving as executive architect and Andre Kikoski Architect designing the interior space. The building’s red stone construction pays homage to nearby Chelsea’s industrial roots, while its glass curtain-wall façade offers a modern slickness. It’s within this framework that architect and designer Andre Kikoski brought One Hudson Yards’ interior to life.

The Andre Kikoski Design Approach

Aesthetically, Kikoski tends to play with the synthesis between art and architecture, seen in his recent work designing the The Wright restaurant at the Guggenheim Museum. He carried that aesthetic through to his work at One Hudson Yards. Kikoski’s vision of livable luxury incorporated unconventionally artful and exotic materials to create an environment that’s at once sophisticated and luxurious, yet warm and inviting. “It’s not about luxury being exclusive and haughty,” Kikoski says. “It’s about luxury being welcoming, celebrating craftsmanship and creating an emotional warmth and richness. The goal for us, ultimately, was to create a sense of joy and emotional wellbeing.”

To execute his vision, Kikoski chose unique materials of unrivaled elegance and quality, relying on commissioned work from artisans and craftsman all over the world and bespoke products from the finest furniture, lighting and plumbing fixture manufacturers in the industry. This level of quality can be seen in the furnishings, fixtures and artwork Kikoski selected for the One Hudson Yards communal areas and apartment spaces—like custom and vintage furniture, contemporary art, marble kitchen countertops and an array of high-quality textures throughout.

The bathrooms in each apartment were no exception. To complete the textural aesthetic of St. Laurent marble floors and Brazilian quartzite vanities and walls, Kikoski needed to partner with a company whose bath fixtures and fittings were equally as exquisite.

It’s the best of all worlds. Kohler has incredible resources and incredible local traditions and people who are aligned to make things happen. It has the personal attention of a mom-and-pop shop, yet it has a global presence.

Kikoski + Kohler

For Kikoski, a collaboration with a design-forward company like Kohler made perfect sense. The style and quality of KOHLER® and KALLISTA®—a subsidiary of Kohler Co. that’s known for its thoughtfully created luxury faucets and fixtures—simply fit the aesthetic goals better than any other brands. And Kohler’s capacity to execute grand design ideas paralleled Kikoski’s boundary-pushing textural visions, ultimately leading him to select KOHLER and KALLISTA as brand partners in design. “It’s American craft,” says Kikoski. “And it’s the best of all worlds. Kohler has incredible resources and incredible local traditions and people who are aligned to make things happen. It has the personal attention of a mom-and-pop shop, yet it has a global presence.”

Designing Better Bathrooms with Kohler and Kallista

Designing Better Bathrooms with Kohler Products

For the bathrooms at One Hudson Yards, Kikoski chose some of the finest KOHLER products, including San Souci™ toilets and Verticyl™ bathroom sinks, as well as Underscore™ and Bellwether™ bathtubs. Kikoski also selected KALLISTA products, including dual-function handshowers, One™ Collection accessories, and the stunning One Decorative faucet with clean geometry and marble-embedded handles—designed by Kikoski himself—that provide quality and luxurious experience at every touch.  The sculptural forms, unconventional materials and luxurious finishes echo the aesthetic emotions of the colors and furnishings in the apartments and the commissioned artwork throughout the building’s communal areas.

The collaboration proved effective—not only did it yield beautiful results, but the design values of Kohler were also in perfect sync with Kikoski’s. He notes that Kohler shares some of the same principles — ideas about emotional connection, an emphasis on experience, the goal to always create something iconic and a high value on art. “These principles have been important throughout the history of Kohler,” he says, “and they’re so much a part of the DNA of our firm.”

Signs of Success

Ultimately, great architectural design is less about aesthetics choices, specifically, than it is about creating something people love and want to be a part of. One Hudson Yards is the fastest-growing development area in New York City, and within that real estate market, apartments at One Hudson Yards are being rented faster than in any other building. With One Hudson Yards, Kikoski’s goal, above all, was to design a sophisticated but warm landscape in which people feel welcome and comfortable. Thanks to unrivaled design quality and collaborations with artisans and brands like KOHLER and KALLISTA, One Hudson Yards achieves just that.
