Design London 2022

Kohler is partnering with London-based artist Lois O’Hara to explore movement in design and the positive impact color has on people and places.  Lois’ signature style, which uses flow and movement in art to bring spaces to life, connects the natural fluidity of water to shape, movement, and color.

As part of this collaboration, Lois’ immersive art will be showcased in an installation at Design London, where Kohler will also sponsor Discussions at Design London, a series of headline talks and panel discussions highlighting future trends and current movements within design and architecture.

The art installation will then be hosted for public viewing at the KOHLER® Experience Center

in London through the month of October. The partnership will culminate with a night with Lois O’Hara on October 20. Invitation to the event is strictly by invitation only. Please email SKContactUs@kohler.com for any inquiries.

Multidisciplinary artist Lois O'Hara creates movement in design and explores how color can have positive effects on people and places. Here’s what she had to say..

Explain your approach to design in a few sentences.

My creative practice is based on the idea of creating movement in design. By experimenting with fluid lines and curved shapes, my signature style brings public spaces to life.

How have you come to establish your unmistakable style?

It slowly progressed over time. I started screen-printing when I was younger and gradually my prints got bigger, eventually turning into murals and installation.

I’m inspired by human behavior, the way people think, and being from the seaside town of Brighton, nature such as the movement of the sea.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Textures which are found in nature, the patterns from the sea.. I also take color samples from my sunset photography all the time. Music plays a big part in my creative process too.

Why did you choose these colors specifically to incorporate into your work with Kohler?

It took me a little while to decide upon the color palette as I wanted it to feel light and fresh. As well, it had to feel elegant or gracious in some way—a color palette which really reflected and complemented the beautiful product ranges shown at the KEC London.

What about the KOHLER® brand, products, or design ethos made you excited to collaborate with Kohler?

There are many similarities between water and the way my designs flow, which makes this a very natural partnership between us. Kohler is an ethical and sustainably conscious company too which really resonates with the style and theme of my artwork.

What’s your favorite type of project to work on?

I love to work on large installations as it’s such a good feeling seeing everyone react to the work and witnessing how it makes them feel or move. I think having color in a public space is very empowering.

You’ll be hosting a live mural painting event at KEC London later this month, what can guests expect to experience that evening?

Guests will get the chance to learn how I build up my layers when I’m painting and how I create such crisp lines with a brush. It’s all in the details!
