Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Desroches Island, a tiny ocean patch that houses a population of just 100 people, resides in the chain’s outer cluster of remote coral atolls, considered one of world’s most pristine and untouched. To call it a secluded ocean paradise is an understatement. This is privacy and luxury in totality.
Desroches Island is home to one resort, the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island, which opened in March 2018. Singapore-based firm eco.id executed the resort’s architecture and interior design with the goal of blending the raw, rustic vibes of the tropical environs with the lavish experience the Four Seasons brand is known for. Eco.id director Carol Chng likens that combination to a luxury version of Robinson Crusoe Island. “With the selection of materials, we wanted it to have a raw look. We wanted things to look like Robinson Crusoe built them himself. But because it’s a Four Seasons, it had to be luxurious.”
That look hinges on a carefully executed balance of design restraint and selective points of visual interest. The broader palette relies on textures, materials and finishes and neutral tones, while pops of color and chunky patterns—like bright pink peacock chairs and bold tropical leaf fabric in the upholstery—reflect the island’s African culture and maintain a lively design aesthetic.
This symbiosis is particularly evident in the design details of the guest bathrooms and open showers, where Chng partnered with Kohler to select products and finishes that complement the aesthetic.
Chng chose faucet handles from the KOHLER Artifacts™ collection in Oil-Rubbed Bronze finish—a colonial look with a patina that’s naturally weathered and casually sophisticated.
“KOHLER products are known for their reliability,” says Chng. “But the specific look was also very important to us.”
Chng says the reliability of both the aesthetics and the finishes that KOHLER products offer gave her confidence that they’d look great and stand the test of time. “It was quite an easy choice,” she notes.
In each guest bathroom, Chng chose Artifacts faucets in the Oil-Rubbed Bronze finish to work in flawless visual tandem with aged brass design details in the bathroom. The same finish was selected for the bath filler and handshower for the freestanding bath, which complement kilim rugs and a stool made of petrified wood, both in geometric African-inspired black-and-white patterns. The Oil-Rubbed Bronze finish was also chosen for the Artifacts shower trim on the outdoor shower, treating guests to a luxurious feel at every touch when showering al fresco. KOHLER showering products are also present in the interior showers, including the versatile HydroRail™-R shower column combined with the Traditional Round rainhead and Artifacts trim, all in the Oil-Rubbed Bronze finish.
Behind the scenes, the KOHLER products showed the true value of their reliability, consistency and quality craftsmanship in the installation challenges of combining them with custom-made pieces.
“The installer had to do some modifications to ensure that the connections between the mixer and the spout could be done while fitting within the given space,” explains Chng. “It worked seamlessly with KOHLER.”
